Retaking an NCEES Exam
If you need to retake an NCEES exam, you do not need to notify the Board in any way. You must register with NCEES (log in or create a MyNCEES account) to retake the exam in accordance with NCEES registration policies.

Retaking the State-Specific Civil Engineer Exams, State-Specific Professional Land Surveyor Exam, Traffic Engineer Exam, Geotechnical Engineer Exam, or the Professional Geologist California Specific Exam (CSE)
You must use BPELSG Connect to submit the request and pay the exam fee(s) prior to receiving Authorization to Test (ATT) notice(s).  Review the applicable submittal instructions below.     

  • Legacy Applicants Initial Exam Registration in BPELSG Connect:

If you have an approved legacy (paper) application on file with the Board, please contact the Board at (916) 999-3635 for Re-Exam Request submittal instructions.

  • Exam Request Submittal Instructions in BPELSG Connect:

These instructions apply to you if you have submitted an initial application in BPELSG Connect or a prior Exam Request in BPELSG Connect.  

Log in to BPELSG Connect, click the “Request Exam” link listed under the “Action” column on your dashboard, complete the request and make a payment.  After payment, you will receive Authorization to Test (ATT) notice(s) via email with instructions on how and when to schedule your exam(s) with Prometric.  Please be aware that you might not be able to schedule your exam(s) with Prometric until 120 days before the start of the exam date/window.    Contact the Exam Unit at (916) 999-3644 or BOEXAM@dca.ca.gov if you have questions about scheduling your exam or if you do not receive your ATT(s) after payment is made (check your SPAM and junk email boxes before contacting the Board). 

Read the information below specific to the exam(s) you are taking for submittal and payment cut off dates.

  • State-Specific Civil Engineer Exams Information:
    You will have the choice to take the exam(s) in one of two quarters following the quarter in which you make the exam request(s) and pay your exam fees in BPELSG Connect; however, you will not be able to take the exam(s) in the same quarter that you make the exam request(s) and pay your exam fees in Connect.  For example, if you make your exam request(s) and pay your exam fees in Quarter 1, you will be able to schedule your state-specific exam(s) in Quarter 2 or Quarter 3, but not in Quarter 1.  See the chart on Applying for Licensure as a Civil Engineer for details.  Once you have paid for an exam and selected a quarter, your eligibility is only valid for the quarter you selected.  
  • State-Specific Professional Land Surveyor Exam Information:
    You will have a choice between the spring or fall exam dates. You will need to schedule and pay your exam fee in BPELSG Connect by March 9th for the spring exam, or September 9th for the fall exam.
  • Traffic Engineer Exam Information:
    The exam is administered once a year during a two-week window.  If you have not scheduled and paid your exam fee in BPELSG Connect by August 26th, you will be required to take the exam in a subsequent exam window.
  • Geotechnical Engineer Exam Information:
    The exam is administered once a year during a two-week window.  If you have not scheduled and paid your exam fee in BPELSG Connect by September 2nd, you will be required to take the exam in a subsequent exam window.
  • Professional Geologist California Specific Exam (CSE) Information:
    You will have a choice between the spring or fall exam dates.  You will need to schedule and pay your exam fee in BPELSG Connect by January 27th for the spring exam, or August 27th for the fall exam.


Retaking the Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG), Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG), or the Professional Geophysicist (PGP) Exam
CEG, CHG, PGP Re-Exam Form

Submit the CEG, CHG, PGP Re-Exam Form and exam fee to the Board via mail, postmarked by the final file date on the Exam Schedule.  You will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) via email 4-6 weeks prior to the exam date.  Contact the Exam Unit at (916) 999-3644 or BOEXAM@dca.ca.gov if you have questions about scheduling your exam or if you do not receive your ATT (check your SPAM and junk email boxes before contacting the Board). 

Retaking the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and/or Practice of Geology (PG) Exams

Applicants previously approved to take the ASBOG FG and/or PG exam(s) do not need to submit a Re-Exam Application to the Board, create a BPELSG Connect account (only applicants that need to retake the Professional Geologist California Specific Exam must create a BPELSG Connect account; see above for instructions), or contact the Board in any way to retake the exam(s) that they were previously approved for.  Applicants will pay exam fees and seat fees directly to ASBOG’s exam vendor Prometric/Iso-Quality Testing (IQT) and sign up for the exam(s) through Prometric/IQT upon email notification.  Prometric/IQT will send an email to all eligible exam candidates in early February for the spring exam and in late August for the fall exam (from the following email address: registrations@isoqualitytesting.com).  Please do not contact ASBOG or Prometric/IQT regarding your eligibility; wait for your email notification.  If you believe you are eligible, but you do not receive your email notification in the timeframe described above, you may contact the Exam Unit at (916) 999-3644 or BOEXAM@dca.ca.gov.  Check your SPAM and junk email boxes before contacting the Board.  For additional information about the exams, please read ASBOG’s Candidate Handbook and ASBOG's website; however, please do not contact ASBOG.
